If you have a newer model vehicle, you might have an auto-dimming rearview mirror. What this means is that it works to reduce excess light without any input from you. It uses a sensor to detect excess light and then sends a signal to a gel located inside the mirror itself.
The electrical pulse works through the gel to remove light until the balance has been restored inside the cabin. If you encounter excess light conditions again during your journey, the auto-dimming feature will activate again to protect your eyes from unnecessary strain.
